What It Is to Be PUNK
MORE THAN JUST MUSIC
A lot of people have asked me how to define "punk music" But what people have to realize is that punk is a little deeper than just a sound or energetic music. Being punk goes along with a whole set of ideals. Those that live by these ideals are said to be "punk" and i guess those who go by these ideals, if they happen to produce music, that music would be punk as well. So the point im trying to make is that even though when we think of punk we think of fast music with double bass pedal and kickin drum beats and heavy bass and guitar riffs, if Rancid or Lagwagon were to go up on stage and play classical shit or whatever, it would still be punk. I think its more the message behind the music more than just the music itself. Like The Doors, its using the music to break through destroy the walls of ignorance.

PUNK IDEALSAs I mentioned above, being punk goes along with a certain idealism and perspective on life and interacitions. A lot of people have connected being punk with being violent. This is far from true. A punk may be active, which may lead to violence, but will not be violent unless it is felt necessary. I read a whole thing on the "Bad Religion" web site about how punks are steriotyped as being violent when the real problems come from those who will not take the time to try to understand his/her point of view. So then what is this idealism that i speak of? The way i view it, which may be different from others points of views, is that we seek unity through our differences. We support diversity and free thinking. We see conformity as a barrier against achieving our full potential. Punks are also labelled as rebels, which may be true, but only when there is cause. Authority should be fought if it is unjust. Opression and persecution are forms of ignorance and insecurity, and they should be exposed. So when there is injustice, it should be fought. This my son is the way of the punk.

PUNK FASHION
One thing that ive found to be very disturbing is how there are many people that feel being punk is nothing but a fun rebelious trend that allows them to wear weird clothes. This i think contradicts everything abouth being punk. Those people are nothing but poorly dressed preps. And ive also heard a lot of "look at that punks shirt" or "your not a punk, you dont have piercings" So id like to expose that as being the biggest crock of shit ive ever heard. This so called "punk fashion" has been distorted from its original purpose, which is a statement against conformity. The purpose of looking freakish is infact to do just that, not to look cool. Looking different is a way to open minds by saying "we dont all have to buy the same shirts from the same stores or have the same hairstyles" So those kids who go around trying to look like blink 182 with there Hurly shirts and spiky hair should not be mistaken as being punk. Not that no one should ever spike there hair or buy converse shoes, but no one should base their identity on how they look. And lets face it, anyone who thinks punk is trendy is a moron, punk has been around for decades, and has always remained an underground movement, and will always be because of its purpose and ideals. And those who are punks are genarally looked upon as losers, which even though is not right, is a sacrifice we must make in order to make our statement, which might one day be recognized by the masses, which is that no one is exactly the same so no one should try to be and that separation of groups of people is as pointless as spending a lot of money to look like a punk. So with those words of wisdom, i hope all you trendy punks will rethink your positions before your next trip to "Pacific Sunwear" to stock up on Hurly shirts.
